Japan Appreciates Indonesian Government's Decision on Coal Exports

The Japanese government is grateful to the Indonesian government for making a decision on coal transporting vessels. The appreciation was given because previously the State of Sakura had protested against the policy of a temporary ban on coal exports because the decision could disrupt the economy.

"I thank you for explaining in detail the Indonesian government's plan to release coal," said Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) Hagiuda Kochi when meeting with Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Tuesday, January 11, 2022.

Luhut gave several directions, including gradually opening coal exports.

A total of 14 ships that already have a full load of coal and have been paid by the buyer to be released immediately for export. The decision has taken into account the condition of coal supply, which is much better.

Then, PLN has also explained that the shortage of coal supply of 2.1 million MT has been fulfilled from the additional assignment of the Director General of Mining on January 9, 2022 and the engagement will be completed no later than January 11, 2022.

Then the need for the fleet to transport coal has been partially fulfilled. From the fleet shortage of 18 vessels and 211 barges, 11 vessels and 187 barges have been fulfilled. The rest are still in the nomination process and all of them are guaranteed by INSA, according to the time and location that has been determined by PLN.

With the fulfillment of additional coal supplies and transportation fleets, the government's intervention measures will provide a positive correction to the operating day (HOP) which was originally in a crisis condition to a minimum of 15 HOP and for remote and critical areas above 20 HOP.
