Hi Healthy Friends! The World Health Organization (WHO) since 2010 has recommended that mothers exclusively breastfeed their babies during the first 6 months of the baby's life and continue for 2 years or more, because breast milk (ASI) is able to balance the nutritional needs of newborns.
Some breastfeeding mothers stop giving their babies breast milk due to lack of milk production. So what are the factors that affect milk production? Let's see the explanation as follows.
1.Nutrition
The food consumed by breastfeeding mothers greatly affects the production of breast milk .
The fulfillment of nutritional needs and regularity of eating patterns make breast milk production run smoothly. The nutritional needs of breastfeeding mothers are higher than pregnant women. The food consumed by breastfeeding mothers does not directly affect milk production, but if there is a lack of nutrition for a long period of time, milk production will decrease until it finally stops.
2. Peace of mind and soul
Some mothers experience emotional changes when 2-3 days after giving birth. So, breastfeeding mothers must have a calm psychological state because it greatly affects the production of breast milk. The psychological state of the mother who is depressed, stressed, sad, and tense will reduce the volume of breast milk. The psychological condition of the mother who is not good can also inhibit the spraying of breast milk.
The baby's cries which sometimes make them nervous also play a role in making the mother feel depressed, so that less milk is issued. Environmental conditions accompanied by a positive or relaxed attitude are important in the success of the breastfeeding process.
3.Rest Pattern
Physical conditions or good rest patterns for breastfeeding mothers will support good milk production in terms of quality and quantity. If the mother's condition is too tired so she doesn't get enough rest, it can make breast milk production decrease. Rest means to rest physically and also the mind until it is completely relaxed. Therefore, breastfeeding mothers need to maintain a pattern of rest so that milk production can continue to run smoothly.
4. Cigarettes and Alcohol
For breastfeeding mothers who smoke, the work of the hormones oxytocin and prolactin can be disrupted due to cigarette smoke. The release of the hormone oxytocin will also be inhibited because smoking will stimulate the release of the hormone adrenaline which makes breast milk production inhibited. On the other hand, mothers who consume alcohol will feel relaxed, but this has an impact on the lack of milk production because ethanol can inhibit the production of oxytocin.
Healthy Friends, apart from the things mentioned above, there are many other factors related to breast milk production. Examples include the use of contraceptives, employment status, breast care and anatomy, suction factors, baby's birth weight and other factors.
