US Ready to Discuss Missile Systems with Russia

The US government has said it is ready to discuss missile systems and military exercises with Russia. Top officials from the two countries are scheduled to hold a meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, to discuss tensions on the Ukrainian border.

“Russia has said it feels threatened by the prospect of an offensive missile system stationed in Ukraine .

The US has no intention of doing that. So this is one area where we might be able to come to an understanding if Russia is willing to make reciprocal commitments," a senior White House official said Saturday.

According to him, Russia has also expressed interest in discussing the future of certain missile systems in Europe, in line with the INF (Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces) Treaty. "We are open to discussing this," he said.

He said Washington was ready to discuss possible reciprocal restrictions on the size and scope of military exercises carried out by Russia and the US and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). "We will not know until these talks start tomorrow (Sunday) evening whether Russia is ready to negotiate seriously and in good faith," he said.

During the meeting in Geneva, US Deputy Foreign Minister Wendy Sherman is scheduled to meet Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov. Sherman will be accompanied by US Joint Staff operations director Lt. Gen. James Mingus. While Ryabkov was accompanied by Deputy Minister of Defense of Russia Aleksandr Fomin.
