Explosions and gunfire echoed through the streets of Almaty, Kazakhstan's largest city, as a Moscow-led alliance of military forces arrived on Thursday (06/01) to help quell the unrest that erupted there.
The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that the first units of Russian troops from the Moscow-led CSTO alliance had arrived in Almaty, after the Kazakh government requested assistance.

It is not known exactly how many troops have been deployed to Kazakhstan.
Meanwhile, Western countries have asked all parties in Kazakhstan to exercise restraint. Interior Ministry spokesman Ned Price warned Russian troops in Kazakhstan not to take over control of state institutions.
"The United States and, frankly, the world will be watching for any human rights abuses," Price said.
Thousands of people arrested

Reported by the AFP news agency, the wreckage of burnt-out vehicles littered the city streets, several government buildings were destroyed, and bullet casings were strewn over the courtyard of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's residence which was stormed and looted by protesters on Wednesday (05/05). /01).

Uranium prices soared
Kazatomprom, the world's largest uranium producer, said on Thursday (06/01) that it would continue to operate normally despite the unrest in Kazakhstan.
Uranium prices soared after riots in Kazakhstan broke out that were initially prompted by protests against rising liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices. Uranium prices hit US$45.50 per pound on Wednesday (Rp637,000), the highest since November 30.
"Uranium mining continues as planned. There is no stop. The company is fulfilling its export contracts," a Kazatomprom spokesman said.
According to the company's website, Kazatomprom will produce about 23% of the world's uranium in 2020.
Rising fuel prices trigger riots
On January 1, the government doubled the price of LPG used for motor vehicles. The move sparked repeated demonstrations in Almaty and the capital Nursultan. Thousands of people took to the streets in Almaty and in the western province of Mangystau to protest that the price hikes were unfair given that Kazakhstan is one of the biggest oil and gas exporters.
