New York Attorney General Letitia James has summoned Donald Trump and his two oldest children, Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump, as part of an investigation into the former US president's business practices.

A New York court filing published on Monday (3/1/2022) said the Attorney General had recently issued subpoenas seeking testimony and documents from the three.

"This relates to an investigation into the valuation of property owned or controlled by Trump or his company, the Trump Organization," the court recording said, as reported by Al Jazeera.

Attorney General James is investigating whether the Trump Organization inflated the value of its properties to secure loans, but reduced it to avoid taxes.

The release of the court filing confirmed December media reports that James attempted to interrogate Trump under oath.

It also exposes the attorney general's efforts to obtain information from the former president's children.

While still in charge of the White House, Trump handed control of the company to his two eldest sons, Donald Jr .
and Eric.

While Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner served as advisers to the president.

His four children are involved in the family business.

The Attorney General's Office questioned Eric Trump, who serves as executive vice president of the Trump Organization, in October 2020.

So far, former president Donald Trump and his family have denied allegations of fraud. The Associated Press and Reuters news agency were unable to contact attorneys for the Trump Organization on Monday (3/1/2022).

Trump last month filed a federal lawsuit against James to block the investigation.

Trump accused the New York Attorney General of using his investigative powers to "target his political enemies and advance his career".

Attorney General James responded by calling the lawsuit a "side attack" from the investigation.

"To be clear, neither Mr Trump nor the Trump Organization can dictate whether and where they will respond to their actions. Our investigation will continue as no one is above the law, not even someone by the name of Trump," he said in a statement at the time.

James is also involved in a separate criminal investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office into the Trump Organization's business practices.

A Manhattan-based investigation led to the release of tax fraud charges against the Trump Organization's former chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg last July.

Weisselberg has pleaded not guilty to charges that he and the organization used lucrative amenities, including luxury cars and apartments, to compensate top executives at the company without paying taxes.
