Archaeologists have re-discovered a mummy that is about 1,000 years old at the Cajamarquilla site in Peru. The mystery of the mummy tied with rope and wrapped in cloth was finally revealed.

Launching Live Science, Wednesday (5/1/2022) the mummy was found in a lying position curled up like a fetus and tied with a rope.

Researchers who analyzed the mummy suspected that this was a male aged 18 to 22 years.

The person who was buried died about 1,200-800 years ago, and was probably the son of a wealthy merchant.

For information, at the time the mummy was buried, Cajamarquilla was a thriving city located on the right bank of the river Rímac, about 25 kilometers inland.

Researchers call this city a place where people from the coastal and mountainous regions of Peru were involved in trading activities .
At that time, it is likely that more than 10,000 people may have lived in the city.

This mummy was found in an underground tomb, and is still well preserved.

The mummy was found covered in cloth and his body tied with rope, which was common among people living in the mountainous area near Cajamarquilla in the past.

An archeology professor at the National University of San Marcos who led Pieter Van Dalen Luna's team said researchers also found remains of dogs and guinea pigs alongside the mummies, along with corn and other vegetable remains.

Family members visit the tomb of this mummy after his burial to make offerings."After the bodies are placed in the tomb, there are events and activities that continue to occur," said Van Dalen Luna.
That is, the offspring keep coming and coming back for years. Families place food and offerings there, including mollusks.

Today, the mummy is on display at the National University of San Marcos museum and researchers are still analyzing the 1000-year-old mummy that was discovered.
