Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said his party had asked US President Donald Trump for pardon for Julian Assange while he was still in office. Lopez Obrador again applied for asylum for Assange on Monday, January 3, 2022.

Earlier last month, Australian-born Assange was almost transferred to a US prison as his case was about to be heard there after Washington won an appeal in a British court to have Assange extradited to the United States.
US authorities charged Assange with 18 counts after Wikileaks published classified US military documents and diplomatic cables, which US authorities said had put the lives of many people at risk.

Lopez Obrador said he had applied for asylum for Assange before President Trump expired in January 2020, being replaced by President Joe Biden. When America was led by Biden, Lopez Obrador also asked him to get Assange pardon.
To date, Mexico has not received a response letter to the request. According to Lopez Obrador, what he did was a form of solidarity and Assange was free to live anywhere, including in Mexico.
