When China spread fear with statements about deploying military to resolve international disputes, Japan chose to welcome the new year by promoting diplomacy and voicing a message of optimism.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Saturday he would refocus his efforts on foreign policy and pledged to make 2022 a year of diplomacy.
This was conveyed in a New Year's statement posted on Kishida's website.
"The competent handling of diplomatic and security issues as well as the formation of a stable government is very important, because the international situation around us is becoming more and more complicated and complex," he said.
Kishida added that a strong emphasis on universal dreams, as well as efforts to resolve global issues and also protect people's lives would be the three principles, which he called "a diplomacy of realism for a new era."
