UK Covid-19 Death Toll Reaches 150,000, Omicron Death Toll Low?

LONDON - The UK's official death toll from the Covid-19 pandemic rose above 150,000 as of Saturday, January 8, 2022, according to government figures, following a record wave of cases caused by the Omicron variant.

Some 313 deaths in the 28 days after a positive Covid-19 test were reported on Saturday, bringing the total number of deaths under the measure to 150,057.

A broader but less timely measure of deaths from Covid-19 - which includes deaths early in the pandemic when testing was limited - stood at 173,248 as of December 24 last year.

"The coronavirus has taken a terrible toll on our country and today the number of recorded deaths has reached 150,000," Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in a statement. "Our way out of this pandemic is for everyone to get a booster or first or second dose if they haven't already."

The UK has seen a spike in cases linked to the Omicron variant of the coronavirus in recent weeks, although the death rate is lower than during previous waves of infections.

The UK government has focused on rolling out booster vaccinations - which have reached more than 60 per cent of the population - rather than requiring a return to the isolation measures seen previously in the pandemic.

Around 1.227 million people tested positive for Covid-19 over the past seven days, 11 percent more than the previous week, while the weekly death toll was up 38 percent on the previous week at 1,271.

There are tentative signs that the number of new cases may have peaked, with 146.390 new cases were reported on Saturday, down from a record 218,724 recorded on January 4.

The UK's cumulative death toll is the second highest in absolute terms in Europe, behind only Russia .

However, on a per head basis, the United States, Italy, Belgium, and several countries in eastern Europe have higher cumulative mortality rates. The UK's death rate is 7 percent higher than the European Union average, according to figures compiled by Our World in Data.
